Gate valves are suitable for most switching operations, vibration-free hydrocarbons and utilities within their temperature range. In vibration operation, gate valves may be opened or closed from their normal position. Unless the stem disc is carefully adjusted, the torque characteristics of gate valves are better than those of ball valves and cock valves, but there is no easy operation characteristic of 90 degree rotation.
1. For manual operated gate valves of DN50 or large size, they should be equipped with elastic gate or expansion gate. Wedge gate valves usually do not have overpressure protection in the valve chamber
2. Open-stem gate valve without protection is not recommended. Because the marine environment will corrode the exposed stem and thread, making the valve difficult to operate and easy to damage the stem disc root.
3. Gate valve with reverse action plate is suitable for automatic shutdown system operation. Simple push-pull operators are available for these valves, thus avoiding the complex lever cams required by ball valves and cock valves in general. All movable parts with power operaters on gate valves can be sealed, eliminating pollution caused by paint and corrosion products.
4. Gate valve can not be used in throttling operation. Especially for fluids containing sand, throttling can damage the sealing surface.
5. The operating temperature of the soft sealing gate valve is limited by the sealing material.
